Effective leadership develops through experiential learning opportunities coupled with timely, specific, and relevant feedback. You will find yourself as part of a team facing several leadership challenges during the second and third days. The final challenge is a large group case study, which builds on all previous lessons learned and requires you to engage in a true-to-life simulation. We are not going to give this exciting challenge away by explaining all the details, but here is a sampling of the valuable lessons you will glean from these experiences:

  • Giving and receiving specific feedback on leadership styles
  • Practice differentiating between leadership and management behaviors
  • Solution thinking "outside of the box"
  • Experience in setting a clear direction and vision for the group
  • Effective communication strategies
  • The importance of identifying and meeting the needs of your customer
  • The role of a leader in business development
  • Learning to allocate your resources to effectively achieve your objectives
  • How leaders can effectively set momentum, develop unity, and create motivation toward achieving goals, and
  • Making a presentation that is strategic in focus and connects with the audience

You will not find a lot of traditional classroom discussion at the Leadership Institute. There are, however, highly interactive and engaging training and skills-building sessions. You will take away knowledge and skills that will help you in your leadership journey. Participation in these exercises focused on leadership styles and changes in construction industry leadership over the past twenty years will enable you to explore the following questions:

  • What makes leaders effective?
  • What are some different styles of leading?
  • What are the essentials of management?
  • What are the essentials of leadership?
  • What are the characteristics of organizations that are well led and well managed?
  • How does leadership change as your roles and responsibilities in a company change?
  • How do leaders finish strong?
  • What personal characteristics distinguish successful leaders from those whose careers derail?
  • What is the organization's role in a leader finishing strong? 
  • What are some keys to finishing strong?
